Womens Health: Treatment for Female Incontinence, Pelvic Pain & Other Women's Health Issues
Lisa Satalino and the The Physical Therapists at The Center for Myofascial Wellness have undergone advanced training using Myofascial Release (MFR) specifically for Women's Health issues. Our clinic is one of the few in the Capital Region of Albany that are trained in techniques that treat the internal pelvic floor.
Myofascial Release can be beneficial in the treatment of:
- Pelvic floor pain and dysfunction
- Infertility
- Incontinence or urinary frequency
- Vulvodynia
- Coccydnia
- Pelvic adhesion from endometriosis or surgical scar
- Interstitial Cystitis
- Fibromyalgia
- Pregnancy related back pain and sciatica
- Headaches associated with menstruation
How can Myofascial Release be beneficial for women suffering with pelvic pain, urinary frequency or incontinence, fertility problems, and menstrual problems?
The Myofascial system surrounds and infuses every organ, nerve, blood vessel, muscle, and duct in the pelvic cavity. When the fascial system becomes restricted in the pelvic cavity, it can create pressure on these delicate and pain-sensitive structures.
Furthermore, the function of the fascial system is to provide support and separation for nerves, blood vessels and organs to function optimally. When the fascia is restricted, pressure on organs such as the bladder lose their capability to fill completely (resulting in urinary frequency) and have less shock absorption and elasticity (resulting in urinary incontinence.)
Fascial restrictions may also interfere with fertility by compression on the fallopian tubes or ovaries. Menstrual cramping may be caused or exacerbated by fascial restrictions as the muscles in the back and pelvic region may spasm or become inflamed during the menstrual cycle.
Tightness and restriction may be caused by any of the following:
- Pelvic adhesions from endometriosis
- Trauma
- Surgical scarring from episiotomy, C-sections, laparoscopy, laparotomy, hysterectomy, etc.
- Inflammatory processes
Myofasical release techniques that are specific to the pelvic region can be helpful in reducing restrictions that may lead to incontinence and pelvic pain. Additionally, Myofascial release also addresses problems with pelvic symmetry and imbalance, and problems with neck / back pain and headaches associated with these issues.
